Welcome to Voorn’s Art Gallery

My work is an exploratory expression of the subconscious freedom. As a surrealist, I try to express the resources and those revolutionary energies that submerge from my subconscious, my dreams, and astral travels. Going back to my european roots, using the old masters’ techniques, I express those images by the use of composition, energy, and the intense values of color.

The Colors

Being a colorist and oil painter the quality and durability of the oil paint is most important to me. I choose to paint in oil because it’s alive and have control over the drying process. Most important is that the intensity of the colors being used will remain and will not fade in years to come. At times I incorporate dry color pigments to my oil paint and medium in order to enhance some of the colors. Color mixing is a complicated process. Besides understanding the theory of color you must be able to feel it to be successful

Paint Brush Selection

Paint brushes are the most important tool for an artist. Since I am an oil painter I choose the brushes that are specifically designed for oil paint. Using the wrong brushes there is always that possibility that the bristles will come loose. Choosing the right brush to paint depends on the concept I want to execute and the technique and strokes I am planning to use. Surreal painting require different brushes then abstract painting

Canvas Process

A painting starts with choosing the right canvas. I buy my canvas  rolled , raw from a reputable art supply store. Double filled, plied yarn, duck cotton canvas. Depending what I have in mind to paint, I build the stretcher, cut the canvas to size and  stretch it over the backing. Three coats of primer (gesso) are applied, sanding down each coat in between creating a solid foundation for the oil paint.
